Long car journey with a toddler: a plan that works
Eight hours to the sea, ten to the mountains, a whole day to the in-laws. A long drive with a little one is mostly about timing, stops and what's within arm's reach of the car seat.
When to leave
- Very early, carrying them to the car in pyjamas, works for many families: two or three hours of sleep and quiet roads.
- At nap time is the alternative: the first stretch passes while they sleep.
- Avoid the evening rush and leaving after a full day, when everyone is already tired.
Stops: more often than you'd like
A common rule is a break every two hours, and babies shouldn't sit in a car seat for long stretches without one. Plan stops at places where children can run: a playground, a park, a service station with a play area. Fifteen minutes of running gives you a much calmer next stretch than a quick toilet stop.
Look up two or three playgrounds or parks near the route before you leave. It saves a lot of time compared with hunting for one with a tired child.
Within reach of the car seat
- A drink in a spill-proof bottle
- Snacks in small portions: rice cakes, fruit, crackers
- Wipes, a muslin, a bag for rubbish
- A comfort toy and a blanket for sleep
- A small bag or box of activities to hand out one by one
- A sun shade on the side window
A rhythm for an eight-hour day
| Stretch | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1st | Sleep or quiet: music, looking out of the window. |
| Stop | Breakfast or a snack outside, a run, a nappy or toilet. |
| 2nd | Car games and songs, then a new activity from the bag. |
| Stop | Lunch at a place with a playground. The longest break of the day. |
| 3rd | Nap time. Audio stories if they don't sleep. |
| Stop | A short run, a drink. |
| 4th | The hardest stretch: the surprise you saved, then a favourite song on repeat. |
Safety first
- Children travel in a car seat suited to their height and weight. Rules differ by country, so check the ones where you'll be driving.
- Keep heavy or hard things out of the back seat: in a sudden stop, they fly.
- Never leave a child in a parked car, even for a moment and even in mild weather.
Quick answers
How often should you stop with a toddler on a long drive?
About every two hours, for at least 15 minutes, ideally somewhere they can run. With babies, take breaks more often and take them out of the car seat.
Is it better to drive at night with a toddler?
Some families leave very early or drive at night so children sleep. It only works if the driver is well rested; a tired driver is the bigger risk.
What should I bring for a toddler on a road trip?
Snacks, a drink, wipes, a change of clothes, a comfort toy and a small set of new activities within reach of the car seat. Our packing list for a car trip has the full list.
